068: In The Bowels

img_20160308_104602.jpgToday, my open data team started scanning old newspaper clippings from Ateneo de Davao library's vertical file. It was quite an adventure getting it set up but by golly we've finally got it going. I have one member of the team running the book scanner full time at the periodicals section of the library.

This little project netted me a visit to the periodicals archive of the library. This is where they keep files of old newspapers, bound and covered in leatherette, some dating back to the 1950's. It was quite a thrill, to be sure. And so strange to be seeing the daily comics from the antiquarian broadsheets, packed so densely panel to panel.

(The title is a bit of a misnomer, actually. The periodicals are in the fifth floor of Weimann Building, so pretty high up. But I can't resist a good title.)

Today I finally gave in and bought an Acer Switch 10 2-in-1 computer. It cost me a bit (well under P20K, but still a bit more than other options I was looking at.) I wanted something portable but with a battery life that would last throughout the day. The old Lenovo, while light, could only manage three to four hours without a charge. It also heats up pretty quickly and to very painful temperatures.

It's a Windows 10 machine, I am ashamed to say, and there's very little chance I will be installing Linux on it. Perhaps I'll try when I've had it for a year or so. In the meantime, I'm going to keep my curious hands off the operating system.
