Empty hallways

With finals down last week, and summer classes a month away, the corridors of the school are bereft of milling students. Only the ghosts remain.

Last stab at classes

Some students and teachers are still working through their final projects this week. In the meantime, I'm already enjoying my break.

"I Want to Play!"

My nephew checking out a game on my phone.  At four years old, he can already search for videos and pictures on the web; and he actually types them out himself!  Favorite links are Ben 10 and Super Mario Bros.

Our Lady of the Assumption East Wall

East wall is the proper term for the wall behind the altar, regardless of the direction you are actually facing. In the past, all church buildings faced east, and it is still the case for eastern Orthodox churches today. A person who enters the church goes from west to east, which symbolizes going from the evil of the present world to the glory of the New Jerusalem to come. See this glossary on church architecture.

Guarding the Balloons

Zone of Blindness

It used to be that I'd finish a novel in a week or two, sometimes less. Nowadays, my reading has gone down drastically. Two reasons I can think of: today's fiction just doesn't appeal much to me anymore, now that I've been behind the curtain; and two, as much as I hate to admit it, I can't see as well as I used to.

I got so worried about my eyesight that I went to an ophthalmologist. After a battery of tests, he gave me the verdict: nothing out of the ordinary, just plain old presbyopia. In other words, I'm getting old, and I can't see as well as I used to.

Presbyopia is the progressive degeneration of vision for close ranges. This happens as the eye muscles weaken with age, and therefore is unable to focus properly at close distances. So my regular glasses are fine for walking or driving, and for looking at things far away; for reading, not so much.

My presbyopia has introduced what I like to call as my "zone of blindness". Any closer than 30cm, and I can't focus properly with my glasses on; but without my glasses, I can only make out 12-point font from at most 15cm. Between those two ranges, reading is just uncomfortable. But as it happens, that's about the comfortable distance from which I can hold a book, or write with a pen on paper.

Ayayay...I'm getting old.

Proud to be Dabawenyo

As part of this year's Araw ng Dabaw celebrations, the city government has put up these bulletin boards where citizens can post their appreciation for Davao. A brilliant idea, and the locals are loving it. Here are some of the messages posted at the People's Park.

Jupiter and Venus

At first glance, they appear to be just pinpoints of light against a field of black. These are actually Jupiter (top left) and Venus (bottom right) shining side by side on tonight's evening sky. For some reason it gave me immense pleasure looking at these two bright 'stars' so close to each other. Bystanders who saw me take pictures also stopped to admire the celestial bodies. I hope it gave them something to think about as well.

Oh, and Mr. Asimov, you're wrong. If the stars should come out just once in a thousand years, I'll look upon them as I do every night: with joy and wonder.

Je t'adore

I like the goofy look these gals have on their faces. I don't quite know who the guy is or what he's telling them to hold them in such rapt attention. If it's a story, it must be really good.

Update: Thanks to Baia, I have a better understanding of the scene above. The guy is Baian Valdez of the local band Alto Indio. Thanks, that explains a lot.

Caterpillar

My first time to see a real caterpillar, and I saw it at Malagos Garden Resort. Emily got the willies watching the creepy crawly, as did I, but it was so fascinating.

Bird Feeder

Feeding time at the Malagos Garden Resort bird sanctuary. You can actually go in and interact with the birds. The friendly guide will give you birdseed; and you won't have a long wait before the African lovebirds settle on your arm to peck greedily at their treats.

Milestone: 2,500 posts

Looks like I'm about to cross  another milestone on this blog: I've just crossed the 2,500 posts mark.

Butterfly sipping on nectar

Malagos Garden Resort has a buttefly sanctuary with plenty of excellent specimens.

Grazing

Breaktime in Malagos Garden Resort, for both man and beast.

Equestrial

Pony and horse taking a midday break from tour duties. I shot this at Malagos Garden Resort, where Emily and I spent the Sunday afternoon. Malagos had plenty to offer: good food, a quiet atmosphere in the midst of nature, and plenty of bird and butterfly encounters I haven't found elsewhere.

Ponkie, our family dog

Ponkie, our family dog, striking a regal pose while out on the park.

I gotta hand it to the shi tzus, though. For a small dog breed, they're rather quiet, not like other small dogs that yip and yap like they're on caffeine. (If you're asking, yes, I am referencing the Far Side cartoon.)

These pictures were in fact harder to take than they look. Ponkie doesn't sit or stand still for very long, as he's all excited to be out in the park, so he's sniffing this way and that. There were a couple of poses I was really hoping he'd fall into, but I suppose when it comes to photographing animals, you just have to take what you can get.

Captain America and Captain Britain

Action figures from the Captain America movie line got a hefty discount. From P400 or so, they're now down to P200. I bought a Captain America with Missile Launcher because that was the only one with a plain shield; and I got a Captain Britain fig as well because I have fond memories of the art of Alan Neary and Paul Davis.

Bee

Took the dog out for a walk this morning and for once brought the camera with me. I found this bee nectaring among the weeds. Thought this would make a good break from all the black-and-white photos I've been posting lately.

Emcee

Er, yes, that's me, all dressed so neat and spiffy. I had to take over Dr. Tonnie's hosting duties briefly. Photo taken by my friend BJ PatiƱo, who fortunately misunderstood my request to take care of my camera while I went up, and took several pictures of me instead.

Dr. Tonnie Emberda

Dr. Tonnie Emberda, of Ateneo's School of Business and Governance. We were running the event for the formal launch of the Ateneo centers and institutes yesterday.

The Ateneo Mace

The mace is a traditional symbol of authority, used in institutions of European descent. And yes, its name actually derives from the weapon.

This here is the Ateneo mace, put on display in most formal events. It's an impressive piece of work, about a foot and a half in diameter at the head, all engraved metal. Quite heavy, too. I never see it paraded, and that's a bit of a shame. Might be because of the heft and the weight. But darned if I won't volunteer to carry it if ever given a chance.

Puppy for Sale

Right outside Ateneo are vendors of all sorts. Most of the time they hawk street food or fruits; but from time to time, we get folks like this gentleman here hoping to score the sale of a puppy. The puppy will go for P300 or so -- P500 if he's lucky -- just enough to keep the family fed for a few days more.

Houston, we have a problem

There is this moment in every student's life: it's the last semester before graduation, your fate hangs upon the final project you've worked on so hard for so many months, and...just before presentation, you hit upon a glitch. Someday when you're older -- when you have the benefit o perspective -- you'll look back on those days and smile, even laugh. But for now...for now...doesn't it just feel like the end of the world?
