Presenting the kingfisher, which has been hard to photograph.  Unlike swallows and finches which like to perch out in the open on wires, this bird hides in branches.  It also flies off at any sign of approach.  I finally got a good shot from a distance using the 300mm.

Of the already many nice things about photography, I have to add that it's getting me interested in birdwatching.  And now that I'm posting the pictures here, I have to do some research on the birds.

For instance, I always thought this was a finch.  But after some googling, it turns out this is closer to a kingfisher (don't hold me on that, though; I still need verification with the experts.)
