Quite a sad sight. As a rule I don't give to beggars anymore, but I couldn't help myself. I knew, though, out of sight, the girl's mother or sister was eyeing her carefully. Probably to make sure she didn't run away with the money.Sad, really.

Marilyn tells me Dumaguete has a city ordinance which discourages people from giving to beggars. Apparently, these kids are sometimes "hired" by their own parents so they can have money for cigarettes or liquor...or simply as a way to make money.
ReplyDeleteI don't know how much of it is true. I asked if there were programs to help those who truly were in need of food, and Marilyn said there were.
Still, it is quite sad, as you say.
