Sacha cartoons

Sacha asked me to draw her in cartoon and I gladly accepted the challenge. I wanted to do it manga-style, so here was my original pencil sketch:

The cat ears are a running joke between Sacha and myself.

Now, here begins my problem. My pencils are passable, but I am terrible at inking, and moreso with digital inking. Which is a shame, because I've got this nice Wacom tablet. Anyway, I did give it a try, and here is the result:

Coloring needs some work, because I should be introducing shading and all that, but I'll leave that for when I get better at it.

Inking and coloring were done on Gimp, by the way.

  1. Coloring is tough. GIMP - I find it a bit hard to use, especially coloring with a mouse. A pen and tablet would be nice;)

You are good at this even though you say you're not. I feel frustrated all the more! *tears at my hair*

  2. Hmm... I have worked on layouting comics for a publication (in high school). Our workflow then was to scan in the artwork, flip the scan to greyscale, twiddle around with levels (or grayness curves) to get crisp lines and to remove pencil marks, then use Photoshop to trace the lines (I forgot what incantation we used to select them though). If the artwork needed to be colored in, same deal. :)

I haven't used GIMP much (and yes, I do promise to use GIMP from now on and ditch my copy of Paint Shop Pro), but I think you could do levels and curves. That would have simplified some of the (digital) inking.
